Moving to Raleigh

April 21st, 2008 by matt

I’ll be moving to Raleigh, NC in June (exact date yet to be determined). Why? Basically, it comes down to: I hate northern VA.

Short reason long, I’m looking to get my master’s degree in computer science. I’ve grown to loathe my current job and, while I do get to do some programming and analysis in my current position, my options are severely limited without a CS degree. I don’t want to pursue my degree full time, mainly because I like having money and not needing to eat ramen five days a week, so that means I will be taking classes on a part-time basis. Part-time means it will take me about five years to complete the degree. I cannot fathom living in NoVA for another five years.

People in NoVA are, generally speaking, douchebags. People are not courteous. There is a very palpable sense of “me, me, me” in the air. No one cares about other people. No one can drive in this area. No one can park, it seems. The traffic is unbearable. You cannot get anywhere quickly (Fairfax County’s idea of traffic control is to add more stoplights instead of designing better traffic patterns). Living in this area is like hundreds of mental paper cuts.
I’ve just had enough and I know I need to get out while I still can.

So I’m moving to Raleigh and will hopefully be starting classes at NC State in the fall. I say hopefully because I haven’t heard back from them as to whether I’ve been accepted or not. I do know they’ve received my application and all the associated required materials, but no verdict as of yet.

I’ll also be “going remote” with my current company. That means I’ll do my same job but I’ll be a remote employee. That will be an interesting working environment, to say the least. I hope I like it, because there isn’t any going back.

So now I’m in the process of finding an apartment and finalizing exactly when I’ll be moving.  I’m planning on driving to Raleigh this Thursday to scope out some apartments (and hopefully pick one). Thursday will be along day.

So anyone who wants to visit me in Raleigh is certainly welcome!
