Mooney over DC

Marci and I went to see The Mooney Suzuki on Wednesday (Valentine’s Day). It was Marci’s VD gift to me. Awwww. My gift to her was dinner and whiskey so she’d do me later. Anyway, The Mooney Suzuki were absolutely incredible. They just flat-out rocked. I had never seen them before, but I have their albums and really like their sound (major props to Shep for introducing me to them). I knew they were a good band, but I had no idea how good until I saw them Wednesday. You know how a good band can start and stop a song in complete unison? That was The Mooney Suzuki. You know how a good band can deviate from the song as it was recorded on the album, in some cases deviate spontaneously on stage? That was The Mooney Suzuki. You know how a good band can play very loudly yet still sound good, without any major distortion? That was The Mooney Suzuki.
My favorite song by TMS is the title track from Alive & Amplified, their most recent album. The song has been on some commercial in the past, so you might have heard it all ready. F’ing fantastic song. All evening during the show I was hoping they would play it. After each song I was thinking, “OK, now Alive & Amplified. Alive & Amplified…now!” They finally played it as the last song before they left the stage. What a fantastic way to go out. I’m not sure if they came back out for an encore because we had to run to the Metro station in order to make the last train. ‘Tis the plight of those who rely on public transportation.
If you’ve never listened to The Mooney Suzuki, I highly recommend giving their stuff a spin. Their albums are on iTunes. They also have a page on MySpace.
